Digital Radiography | Digital X-rays
Digital Radiography is the newest way to take x-rays. It involves using an electronic sensor that captures and displays an x-ray image on a computer. This allows the dentist to view the image in precise detail, while cutting down on radiation by as much 80-90%, compared to traditional x-ray machines.
Dental x-rays provide valuable information that can help to prevent and treat oral problems, which may not be visible during regular examinations. Dental x-rays help to reveal:
• Abscesses or cysts in the mouth
To schedule a digital x-ray, contact McKenna Dental or visit our office at 3002 W. Tilghman Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. 18104 (Lehigh Valley)

Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Sealants are thin plastic or porcelain coverings that are attached over your teeth’s biting surfaces. They are used to fight decay and stop germs / bacteria from afflicting teeth.
Sealants are quick and easy to apply. The dentist will first clean and dry your teeth, before applying the dental sealant. The sealant is then hardened with a special light, which takes roughly one minute.
Sealants are highly durable and last up to 10 years, with proper care. However, good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are still necessary.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance that can be found in water, toothpaste and mouthwash. It helps to prevent tooth decay and cavities by strengthening your enamel.
Our in-office fluoride treatments are more powerful and more effective at protecting your teeth. They are administered via gel, foam or varnish. Before the fluoride application, your teeth are cleaned and dried.
While fluoride is safe, you should never swallow it. Your dentist will give you detailed instructions to care for your teeth after your appointment.

Non-Surgical Gum Therapy Smile Makeover
While daily brushing and flossing help to keep your smile healthy, it’s still possible for your mouth to develop gum disease. For this reason, regular dental visits are an essential part of your oral care / hygiene routine.
Depending on the severity of your gum disease, non-surgical gum therapy may be recommended, to eliminate the harmful toxins from your gumline. It involves using a variety of techniques - curettage, root planing and possibly local anesthesia.
Curettage involves removing the infected tissues around a tooth, to allow that area to heal. Root planing involves removing and smoothing out the tooth’s roots so that healing can occur. Local anesthesia may also be used, depending on the patient.
To ensure a successful treatment, treatment is usually spread out over a period of time. A gum specialist (periodontist) may also be needed, should the patient need additional intervention.
Dr. McKenna will collaborate with you to ensure your gums are fully healthy. Contact McKenna Dental, Allentown, PA 18104- Or request a consultation.
Oral Cancer Exams and Vizlite Plus
Our doctor’s main concern is your well being. As a result, we also perform oral cancer screenings as part of your comprehensive examination.
To successfully treat oral cancer, early detection is vital. Oral cancer develops from abnormal cell growth, which can occur in your mouth, lips, throat, or tongue. Signs of oral cancer include:
• White or red spots or lumps in your mouth
• Color changes in your mouth
• Sores or patches
• Trouble swallowing
Dr. McKenna will thoroughly check for abnormal growths in your mouth by using Vizlite Plus. Vizlite Plus is a quick, safe and effective system that detects abnormal oral cell lesions, including cancerous cells. The procedure only takes 2 minutes to complete and is clinically proven to be accurate.
If suspect areas are found, we will perform a ‘brush test’ and collect some samples of the suspect area for further testing. If the area is confirmed as ‘positive’, further treatment may be necessary, such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or even surgery. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may also be part of the treatment plan.
